Day 01: Arrival at Paro, Your First Glimpse of Bhutan

The flight into Bhutan takes you close to the great Himalayas, offering dazzling scenic views of some of the world’s highest glacial peaks. If you get a seat on the left side of the plane and the weather cooperates, you may have spectacular views of the eastern Himalayas including Cho Oyu, Everest, Lhotse, Makalu, and Kanchenjunga—five of the highest peaks in the world—as well as peaks in Bhutan such as Jhomolhari, Jichu Drakye, and Tsering Kang. You can photograph the highest peaks of the world. As you enter Paro valley, you will sweep past forested hills with the silvery Pa Chhu (Paro river) meandering down the valley below. Paro Dzong (fortress) and Ta Dzong (watchtower) on the hills above the town will be a fine sight.

Today afternoon we combine some nature with culture by taking you on a short hike to the Eutok goenpa, the monastic school across the valley.

Day 02: Cultural Experience with Forest Hike

Today we leave after an early breakfast to make our way by car to Chele La. At around 13,000 feet (3,988 meters) it is the highest motorable pass in Bhutan. It is also the perfect place to hang some prayer flags, if astrologically favourable. After the 2-hours’ drive up to Chele La it is definitely time to stretch our legs. We will hike up another 1,000 feet (305 meters) and experience a 360 degrees’ view of Bhutan’s natural beauty, including the Paro and Haa valley.

From Chelela we will continue our journey higher up the ridge to Gunkharpo (4600m), the location of a sky burial ground. The trail is great for flora enthusiasts, with a huge variety of plants, and depending on the time of year thick Rhododendron bushes and even Blue Poppy. From Gunkharpo we will slowly make our way down through natural meadows and silver fir forests to our destination: Kila Gompa Nunnery, the home of nuns for many years. We will rest there, enjoy the packed lunches prepared by Chefs and after some time return
